What to do when you’re stuck
For the younger me, again. Or for any young programmers who haven’t yet learned this lesson and would accept some external advice — it’s OK if you don’t, I was just like you; you can then read just for fun or, why not, only for awareness: that may help sometimes as well.
Whenever you run into a major issue and the longest set of fix initiatives that you could think of has failed (and you feel that you’d rather throw your computer out of the window and change your career altogether), try one or all of the “magic” tricks below.
The (often very simple) solution you could find this way, either consciously or not, may really surprise you!
I know, at first you may not believe any of them could actually work, but there is scientific evidence that backs up each of them (search and read more, if you want, about the happiness chemicals that drive humans around and up to speed):
- take a long walk (in the nature or wherever you are/can do);
- listen to some (of your favorite) music;
- write or draw something (random);
- (find a comedy of some sort and) laugh;
- cuddle with (or French kiss? 💋) your girlfriend* — this will cheer her up as well; just don’t run to your computer if the solution strikes in the middle of such something, haha!
* I know: “girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/husband/partner”, but I just won’t like the way it’d sound, so please take a(-nother) walk and forgive me. 🙃
OK, that’s it; back to work now. But… have you noticed? I’ve just used the third item in the list above, myself. Hopefully, for some really good result too! 😀
